For these week's assignment, I looked into Poll Everywhere and Kahoot!
For Poll Everywhere, I just made a simple question, "What is your favorite read aloud book?" I could use this question in a couple of ways.
1. To ask my students at the end of the year what they connected with the most.
2. To ask my students at the beginning of the year to get an idea of what they have already read and what they connected with most?
3. To ask my colleagues.
Here is a link to the poll.
Truthfully, I find google forms to provide the same purpose and am more likely to use that for this purpose. I can see the appeal for kids seeing their replies pop up in a more dynamic way, but I just really like the familiarity and functionality of google forms, especially given with how it interacts with google suite.
I remember Kahoot! from the TDAP training in the spring of 2014. My initial reaction was that it was not a very good learning or assessment tool because of the added pressure to answer quickly. I know how that causes anxiety in some students and I don't like encouraging rushing.
However, I started researching some public Kahoots and I decided to search "Greek & Latin Root Words." I found this one that I think the kids would have fun with just to change it up a bit. I don't think I would use it as an actual instructional or assessment tool but just to add variety to their exposure to the concepts. It would be good for prefixes and suffixes, too. (Naomi & Nancy-help me remember that.)
I wasn't a huge fan of Poll Everywhere either -- but I didn't know Forms will give me more of what I want (because I haven't used it -- I think that's the next lesson). I was able to do your kahoot -- awesome -- I favorited it, so now I have it, too! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your assessment of Kahoot. It is great for a different approach, but not for assessment!
ReplyDeleteKahoot! isn't one of my favorites because of the time pressure. It could be a fun tool to use every once in a while, but it stresses me out as a participant! I couldn't get your links to work, though. The Poll Everywhere said I needed to wait for you to begin your poll, so I think that just timed out. The Kahoot didn't give me the game pin to try it out. Can you post that so I can try it out?
