Let the record show that, no, this does not come easy for me. Here is this week's story of overcoming my own technological boundaries.
So, I decided to use Screenr because I had used it once before, but it turned out I needed to update Java. Fine. But, in order to update Java, I needed to update my Mac Operating System. Ugh, but fine. So, I downloaded the installer and then it told me that I wouldn't be able to use my Microsoft Office Suite anymore. I still have the 2003 version. Long story. Not fine.
Back to the drawing board. Let's check out Screen-O-Matic. Oh, also doesn't work with my operating system.
So, Snagit. I'm grateful for my little journey because I liked Snagit. It was easy to use and it is a chrome extension so it would be easy for kids to use and it has a lot more functions than just screencasting. I can see myself using it for screen captures and edits to said screen captures.
I made my little vid and figured it would be pretty easy to get onto YouTube since it was in my Google Drive, but I couldn't figure out the easy way, so I downloaded it to my computer to upload to YouTube. Only I ended up downloading and uploading the first file I made. You know, that one you make to test the waters and try things out. It's even more awkward than the finished product because you are saying things like, "Let's see if this works. Oh, it does. Well, hey."
And then, I couldn't immediately figure out how to delete it. Which really isn't that big of a deal except that I have 457 YouTube followers which is a total joke since I hardly know how to use YouTube. But, I would imagine, they are all just sitting at home waiting for the follow-up to the world-wide smash that was the "Let It Go-Testing Parody" (now viewed 762,316 times between YouTube and Vimeo). And, I really didn't want my "SnagIt Testing the Waters Video" to be that follow-up.
Alas, it turns out no one is waiting for my latest creative endeavor and no one watched it before I deleted it. So, without further ado, I present to you my Google Classroom Tutorial.
I feel your pain - I had problems using Screenr and Screencast-o-matic the last time we taught this class. Snagit makes things much simpler, and I think I appreciate it now after having so much trouble with the other options! Making a tutorial for accessing Google Classroom is a good idea, and I liked how you explained it for both students and their parents. Way to be persistent! And now I have "Let It Go" stuck in my head again...thanks a lot! :P
ReplyDeleteI finally got to activity #3 - saved the best (worst?) for last. Or, at least one of the most time-consuming. I was glad I had read your post first. I didn't bother to use anything but Snagit. I liked your Google Classroom teaching video so used the same type of idea to introduce Raz-Kids in my Screencast. You inspired me!
